About
A blog is a type of website that is updated with new content on a regular basis, usually daily or weekly. Most blogs are created and updated by a single person, and they develop a tone based on the opinions and ideas of that person. Successful blogs may evolve to the point where the original developer no longer creates new updates, but the tone and opinions expressed may be artificially maintained.
Blog content varies widely, but it often revolves around a central theme. Some blogs are political or news related. Others are based on entertainment or local events. Yet others are simply personal journals used to express opinions and commentary or share amusing videos or images.
Most blogs are interactive, but this is not a condition of a website being labeled a blog. Popular blogs may have thousands of posts of active reader commentary on each blog update. Some blogs ask readers to create a user account. This format may be used to create a community in which users can network with each other. It is the goal of many bloggers to build social networks that can enrich their personal lives or their business.
Blogs are primarily composed of text, but some have been popularized through their creative use of images, video, music or web links. It is estimated that as of the beginning of 2011, the number of blogs on the web was over 156 million.
